Do's and Don'ts in Penang | Malaysian customs and culture

Being an Asian state with Asian influences, Penang possesses an extremely rich cultural background. The different communities practice their own customs. While it is difficult to list all of these, a few important procedures and matters to observe while in Penang and Malaysia are the following:

Do's in Penang

  • Religion
Islam is the national religion while the other communities are free to practise their own religions. Respect in attire and general observance during visits to religious places which are opened to visitors should be adhered to. If in doubt, always consult your travel guide or ask the local people.

  • Import Declaration
Declaration should be made to the customs officials on the possession of any plant or parts of plants such as seeds, soil samples, fungus cultures etc., insects or animals and visits, if any, to tropical America or the Carribean during the previous 30 days prior to arrival.

  • Home Visiting
Normally, visitors remove their shoes at the front door, prior to entering a home. Inside most Malaysian homes, shoes are seldom worn. Also, as is practised elsewhere, the presentation of a small gift or souvenir for homevisiting is always appreciated.

Don'ts in Penang

  • Drug (dadah) Trafficking
Malaysia's anti-drug laws are severe and drug trafficking can be punishable by death.

  • Export of Antiques
The export of antiques and other objects of historical value is prohibited unless an export licence to do so has been obtained from the Director General of Museums Malaysia. Alternatively, the objects should originally have been brought into Malaysia and declared to the customs officials.

  • Personal Belongings
Visitors to Penang are always cautioned not to leave valuable personal belongings, travel documents, cameras and the like unattended. Such personal effects should also not be left exposed on car seats. Cars should be carefully locked at all times
