Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (MMSC) is back with a BANG! This year's sale is said to be bigger, better and longer than ever before as Malaysia celebrates its national day. Since the actual date of 31 August falls within the carnival period, everyone can expect a grand shopping fiesta! Organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Tourism Malaysia and the Shopping Malaysia Secretariat, the carnival is a much anticipated annual event by both locals and tourists. In the the good old days ... Back in the 60s, when Penang was a free port, folks from around the country would flock to the island to do their shopping all year round. Whether or not there was a festival or holiday did not matter – what was important were the variety of goods and the attractive duty free prices. Fast forward to the 90s, and even without the free-port status, shopping is still an exciting activity for most Penangites and Malaysians. The variety of goods are still there, and the abolishment of import duties for all leather goods including handbags, shoes, luggage and accessories in addition to previously duty-free items such as cosmetics, pens, watches, cameras and computers proved to be an added boost to making the country an unbeatble shoppers haven. And what better time to shop than during the Mega Shopping Carnival, scheduled to run from 16 June right up till 2 September, promising shopping bags full of bargains and discount buys at major shopping complexes, malls and hypermarkets, including retail outlets, hotels, restaurants and duty-free shops. With so many participating outlets, shoppers will enjoy fantastic discounts on a wide variety of items.
