S.M. Badjenid & Sons – a fragrant legacy
|
A name which many Penangites associate with minyak attars or perfume oils is none other than S.M. Badjenid & Sons. Founded in 1917, Badjenid is the leading and the oldest manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer of perfume compounds, essential oils, bakhoor (incense) and dahn al oudh (a type of heady perfume). They are also involved in the canvas trade, designing and manufacturing canvas covers and tops for a variety of uses. The business' humble beginnings took shape when Sheikh Mohammed Ahmad Badjenid, a Hadhrami from Hadhramount, South Yemen opened a small shop in 1917 in an old part of George Town, Penang. From there, they sold all manner of fragrant oils in single florals or blends. Since then, the business has grown in strength and successfully handed down from generation to generation. Since its establishment, S.M. Badjenid & Sons has always been famous for its wide range of exotic and heady fragrances. Badjenid believes that as far as fragrances and aromas are concerned, nothing beats the more exotic traditional and ancient scents". This may be true for some people because scent is such a subjective sensation, and what smells desirable to one person may not necessarily have the same effect on another. Some prefer the headier scents from bygone days, others may prefer the modern, lighter blends. Suffice it to say that Badjenid caters to a wide range of preferences, and offers an exotic alternative to the European and American brands available at cosmetic counters. Two of Badjenid's more popular scents are Al-Zaharah and Al-Mashuqhah. For the younger set, Badjenid has a range of modern and contemporary perfumes. Lighter in composition than the traditional perfumes, they are used for their daily affairs. Batik retailers | Chain stores | Flea market | second hand goods | Jewellers & goldsmiths
