Ayer Itam Dam - A cool walk between the lake and the clouds

ayer itam dam georgetown

One of the most popular and scenic spots for exercise enthusiasts is the Ayer Itam Dam. Located above the famous Kek Lok Si Temple in the Ayer Itam village on the outskirts of George Town, the Dam is Penang’s answer to the Hoover Dam in USA or the Aswan Dam in Egypt, although at a smaller scale.

Nevertheless the Ayer Itam Dam can hold its own for the breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding areas.

The Dam is located over 700 feet above sea level and is set among the hills which serve as a water catchment area. Because of this, and the lush tropical greenery, the area is cooler than other green lungs in the City and is therefore an attractive destination for those who would like a pleasant walk or jog.

The road which runs along the edge of the Dam is flanked by almost virgin jungle on one side and a wide expense of the water on the other. An observant visitor can spot several types of ferns, monkey cups and other plants common to the region.

For those who prefer a more majestic landscape, the Dam offers a magnificent view of the Georgetown and its eastern suburbs.

There is also a children’s playground equipped with the usual swings and slides to entertain the youngsters.

The Dam was one of the first major engineering projects undertaken by the City Council of George Town after independence. Constructed between 1958 and 1962 at a cost of RM15,000,000, it can hold 550 million gallons of water and is one of the two dams on the island, the other being the Teluk Bahang dam in the north.
It was declared open by the First Governor of Penang Raja Tun Uda Al-Haj Bin Raja Muhamad SMN on 8 December 1962.

A favorite with locals of all ages, the Ayer Itam Dam has become another 'must see' venue for visitors, especially for fitness fans and nature lovers. Being just next to the Kek Lok Si Temple, many visitors plan to visit both at the same day.
