Penang will throb with exotic and enchanting melodies from far corners of the Earth when more than a hundred musicians converge on the island for a pulsing showcase of ethnic sounds on a scale never seen here before.
The World Music Festival makes its inaugural staging in Penang with a splashing confluence of 14 enthralling bands, all echoing the rituals and sounds of ancient traditions that have emerged among civilisations across the world.
For the first time, Penangites will get to witness diverse cultures uniting in a single space with their rich colourful array of sounds. The hypnotic beats of the west African talking drum and the piercing stains of the Malay serunai; the rhythmic Marimba of the sub-Sahara region and divine Sufi ballads of Afghanistan; the mysterious throat singing of Mongolia and the bamboo flutes of the ancient Andes.
Spanning three consecutive days from July 20 to 22, the festival will be held at the new Quarry Garden beside the famed century old Botanic Garden of Penang.
Surrounded by picturesque overhanging cliffs, lush trees and tropical foliage, the garden is an ideal location to host such a grand event under a breezy night sky.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism with Tourism Malaysia, the Penang Tourism Action Council and the Sarawak Tourism Board, the festival draws artists from Sarawak's Rainforest World Music Festival with a few others. The event is supported by Maxis and MBF Cards.
The bands hail from various regions of the globe - the Solomon Islands, the USA, Afghanistan, Italy, South Africa, Tuva, Russia, Singapore, Peru, United Kingdom, Burkina Faso and more.
Of the bands, 11 are international and three Malaysians.
Food stalls will be set up to cater for the crowd in the evening. There will also be ample public washrooms situated at the site and mobile ones for the convenience of the audience.
