In Penang, Chinese New Year is celebrated on a grand style with much feasting and gaiety. Chinese families begin the colourful festivity with the age-old traditional New Year's Eve Reunion Dinner. Lion or dragon dance performances are staged, and relatives and friends visit one another, exchanging gifts, and giving red packets of 'lucky money' to children.
The 'open house' or rumah terbuka concept is prevalent in the Malaysian culture especially during major festivals and celebrations like Chinese New Year. Government leaders hold 'open houses' for the public at their official residences. Likewise in many homes throughout the country, family members visit each other and friends from different religious and ethnic communities are welcome to join in the celebration.
